What’s the best way to lose weight? Undoubtedly, the safest and most effective approach is to eat healthy and exercise; but some people want faster results and resort to unsafe practices such as diet pills and starvation diets. Neither approach works in the long run and both can have serious health consequences. To speed up weight loss further, some people adopt very low calorie diets that fail to provide adequate nutrition. Sure, they may be rewarded with weight loss initially, but inevitably they end up jeopardizing their overall health. What are the consequences of eating too few calories?

How to evaluate weight loss websites

Evaluate yourself before you begin to consider the various offerings of weight loss sites. Decide if you need specific menu plans, supplied food, exercise plans, community support forums, individual counseling or individualized diet plans. Then it will be easier to decide which one is best for you.


Determine how each website handles food plans. Does it offer tools and resources such as meal trackers, recipes and custom meal plans? Do you need guides to eating out? Do you need tips as to which foods are best for you? Does the site do more than just try to sell you food?

Chile Con Queso

  • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup pale ale, or other light-colored beer
  • 1 1/2 cups low-fat milk, divided
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 3/4 cups shredded sharp Cheddar, preferably orange
  • 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles, (see Note), drained, or 1 1/4 cups drained petite-diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sliced scallions
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
